The remake of "A Nightmare On Elm Street" topped the box office, scooping up $32.2 million in North America, more than the first, second, fifth and seventh installments of the original franchise. "How To Train Your Dragon" continues to perform strongly and came in second. Oversees "Iron Man 2" opened to just over $100 million in 53 territories. The only question now is how much money will it make in North America, and will poor advance reviews affect the gross. (Don't bet on it). Lots of big names broke their silence this week. Director Roman Polansky blogged about being arrested in Switzerland. NBC programming chief Jeff Gaspin, told the New York Times Conan O'Brien was no longer a problem or a threat to his late-night lineup since he's moving to cable. O'Brien gave his first televised interview since departing "The Tonight Show" to "60 Minutes". Actress Sandra Bullock gave an exclusive to People magazine about her personal life and the adoption of her son.  Apparently musician Courtney Love is also speaking out, maybe a little too much. The agreement delays the studio's DVD releases to Netflix customers by 28 days while increasing the number of Warner films that are available for digital streaming. In addition, Warner Bros. will lower the per-disc price it charges Netflix to purchase DVDs. That alone could save Netflix millions. Data from Nielsen's top five markets - New York, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia and Dallas - show that NBC stations all saw their 11 p.m. newscasts drop by double digits during the first week of the 2009-10 season. Do networks have an obligation to keep their affiliates happy? And if so, will they have to yank Leno off the air? In movie news, Universal Pictures has tapped its head of marketing, Adam Fogelson as its new chairman and Donna Langley has been promoted to co-chairman of the studio, effective immediately. If you weren’t one of the 126,000 people attending Comic-Con, this episode will fill you in on what you missed.  There was whole day devoted to 3D movies, which apparently isn't just a gimmick anymore.  The big hits of Comic-Con were "District 9", "Avatar", "Kick Ass" and "Iron Man 2" and the biggest miss was Roland Emerich's next movie "2012" which is either so bad it's good, or so bad it's just plain bad.  Irrelevant whether it wowed people at the convention or not was "Twilight: New Moon", because fans just wanted to see Robert Pattinson .  Hundreds of young girls, their moms and a bunch of sensitive men camped out overnight to get into a jam packed "Twilight" panel. The festival was “the redemption of "New Moon" director Chris Weitz, who was clearly adored by his cast. It was definitely the panel with the most security. This year marked the first appearance by Tim Burton (as a presenter), Peter Jackson and Terry Gilliam. Johnny Depp stopped by to say two words (literally) in promotion of Burton's “Alice in Wonderland."  Robert Downey Jr. also made an appearance to help tout "Iron Man 2" and "Sherlock Holmes".  "Sherlock Holmes" reminded some of our panelists of "Wild Wild West", the movie, not the television show. Speaking of television, Comic-Con had panels for several TV shows, both old and new.  The panel for "Lost" was the big draw at this year's confab. Meanwhile, back in the regular world, a bunch of guinea pigs stole Harry Potter's thunder at the box office.  "G-Force" made $32 million beating out "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" which was in its second week.  Finally, the other shoe dropped at NBC, as the embattled chairman Ben Silverman jumped ship to form a new company with mogul Barry Diller. In North America the Ben Stiller starrer "Night At The Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" opened with $70 million against "Terminator: Salvation". McG's attempt to reboot the "Terminator" franchise came in second at the box office with $53.8 million. "Star Trek" continued to rake in the dough with an additional $29.4 million and a cumulative $191 million in North America. Television ratings were also bolstered by the star studded finale of the Fox network's musical reality show "American Idol". Kris Allen beat out Adam Lambert during a telecast that an estimated 28.84 million Americans tuned into. That ties the record for least-watched finale in recent "American Idol" memory, though nmore than 100 million votes were cast, a new record for the show. While Karen believes the results were a travesty of justice, Lambert may not be walking away empty handed after all; Billboard reports the rock group Queen may be interested in the young singer to front the band. Musical pop star Pink wasn't happy with "American Idol" either, though more because she says they butchered one of her songs. Social networking sensation Twitter is working on a reality television series. The web hasn't been as rewarding to "Britain's Got Talent" whose viral video of Susan Boyle has generated more than 70 million views on YouTube, though the New York Times reports that producers can't quite seem to capitalize on the surprise success. "Gossip Girl" star Chace Crawford takes the place of Zac Effron in the remake of "Footloose". Effron is mentioned in an fascinating Entertainment Weekly story about what happens to Disney's teen sensations once they are all grown up and move out of the mouse house. In New York this past week the major television networks held their "upfronts" with potential advertisers. Fox renewed "Bones" and "Dollhouse", NBC renews "Chuck" after an online protest, CBS steals "Medium" away from NBC and Jimmy Kimmel bashes his own network during a presentation to advertisers. Blogger Nikki Finke has all the details. Former Hollywood mogul Jon Peters has to scrap the idea of writing a tell all book once the proposal he sold to HarperCollins leaks. With tons of kiss-and-tell stories about former girlfriends including Barbara Striesand, Pamela Anderson and Catherine Zeta Jones, the once venerable producer sold his book "Studio Head" for $700,000 upfront. However, threatened by lawsuits from some of those mentioned in the book's outline, Peters took it off the market. Journalist Roger Friedman is back on the market. Friedman most recently made headlines after he was fired by Fox News for downloading and writing about the pirated version of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", released by sister company Twentieth Century Fox. The columnist was picked up by The Hollywood Reporter where his blog Showbiz411 will now be published. Finally, the William Morris Agency laid off 100 agents and employees this week in preparation for the merger with Endeavor.
